Door installation cost in Kelowna: interior vs exterior
What you actually pay to swap an interior door, hang a pre-hung exterior, or replace a sliding patio door in Kelowna. Where the cost comes from and where it doesn't.
Quick answer
Kelowna door installation runs $189 for a like-for-like interior swap, $549 for a standard exterior pre-hung, $799 for a French or single patio door, and $899 for an 8-foot sliding patio door. Pet doors are $249. The biggest cost-driver is whether the existing frame is reusable - most interior frames are, most exterior frames over 20 years old aren't.
What's the price for each type of door?
| Door type | Typical Kelowna price | Time on site |
|---|---|---|
| Interior door swap (like-for-like) | $189 | 60-90 minutes |
| Interior door + new frame | $279 | 2-3 hours |
| Exterior pre-hung (32" or 36" standard) | $549 | 2-3 hours |
| Patio door / French door swap | $799 | Half day |
| Sliding patio door (8 ft, two-person) | $899 | Half day |
| Pet door install (dog or cat) | $249 | 1-2 hours |
What changes the price up or down?
Three things drive door install costs in either direction:
- Reuse the existing frame or not. Interior frames from any decade work if they're not water-damaged. Exterior frames over 20 years old often need replacement because of rot or sealant failure.
- Standard size or custom. Kelowna homes built after 1990 use standard 28/30/32/36-inch widths. Pre-1980 homes often have non-standard openings that require either a custom door or a frame rebuild.
- Weather and trim work. Exterior installs need foam-backed weatherstrip, threshold caulk, and sometimes a drip cap. Older homes without these often need the trim rebuilt during the install.
Where does the cost actually come from?
An interior swap at $189 is roughly: 30 minutes removing the old door and hardware, 30 minutes hanging and shimming the new slab, 15 minutes installing the lockset, 15 minutes for final adjustments and cleanup. Tech is on site about 90 minutes including travel.
An exterior pre-hung at $549 is more substantial: 45 minutes removing the existing unit (including disturbed siding/trim), 90 minutes installing the new pre-hung in the rough opening with proper plumb-shim-fasten sequence, 30 minutes weather sealing, 15 minutes for the lockset and threshold. Two visits if winter installs need overnight cure on the sealant. Tech is on site 3-4 hours.
Do you bring the door or do I supply it?
Either works. Most Kelowna customers source the door themselves from Home Depot, RONA, Windsor Plywood, or a specialty door shop. That keeps the install price predictable and lets you compare door options at your own pace.
If you'd rather we source it, send a photo of the opening plus your preference (solid vs hollow, panel style, finish) and we'll bring a few options with pricing. Materials run at cost - we don't mark up doors. There's a $35 materials run fee that covers the extra hour of pickup time.
What about smart locks and keypads?
Smart-lock installation alongside a new door adds $60-$120 depending on the lock model. Most retrofit smart locks (Schlage Encode, Yale Assure, August) install in the existing deadbolt hole and take 30-45 minutes to set up including wifi pairing. Door-handle replacement is included in the door install price; the smart-lock add covers the extra setup time.
Frequently asked
Will my existing frame work with a new door?
Interior frames from any decade work if they're plumb, square, and not water-damaged - which 90% are. Exterior frames over 20 years old often have settled or have rotted at the bottom where snow and rain sit. We check during the booking and quote frame work separately if needed.
Can you install doors year-round in Kelowna?
Yes. Winter installs take an extra 30 minutes for proper weather sealing - we wait for caulk to skin before stepping away. If install day is - 10C or colder, we prep materials inside the house first to keep the sealants pliable.
What about hauling away the old door?
Included. Door, frame, and casing go to the Glenmore landfill. If the door is in good shape, we drop it at Habitat for Humanity ReStore on Hardy Street so it gets a second life.
